We are an old-time band dedicated to performing traditional old-time music, with roots deep in the musical heritage of Appalachia and the American South. Based in Washington, DC, and Maryland, our band brings a unique blend of energy and passion to every performance. Our current lineup consists of a guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, and fiddle, each played by talented musicians who share a love for the genre and its timeless sound.
Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of performing at a variety of notable events and venues, including the renowned Baltimore Old-Time Music Festival and the charming Glen Echo Park. These performances have allowed us to connect with audiences who share our appreciation for the rich history and storytelling inherent in old-time music.
As a band, we’ve been together for about four years, with several members joining and leaving along the way. Through it all, our sound has evolved, but one thing has remained constant: the dedication and spirit of the original five members who came together in 2021. While the journey has had its share of changes, we are proud to have stayed true to our roots, continuing to play the music we love with the same energy and enthusiasm that brought us together in the first place.
We began our musical journey in 2021, in an unlikely but memorable setting — the attic of an ACE Hardware store. As students of a mutual teacher, we found common ground not only in our love for music but in our shared desire to create something special together. Our current organizer, Jonathan Vocke, played a key role in bringing us all together, helping to guide the early days of the band and set the stage for what would become a lasting musical partnership.
When it came time to choose a name for our band, we decided to leave it to chance and put a variety of names into a hat. After drawing one at random, we were initially dubbed 'The All Stars.' While it seemed like a fine name at first, it didn't quite capture the spirit or character we were aiming for. Thankfully, our bassist Eli wasn’t too fond of the name and had a different vision in mind. Determined to make a change, he went home, designed a poster, and returned with a bold new suggestion: 'The Old Time Cobras.'
Eli’s enthusiasm was infectious. He convinced the rest of us that this new name was a much better fit — it reflected the old-time roots of the music we loved and added a little bit of flair and personality. From that moment on, we became 'The Old Time Cobras,' a name that still defines us today and has become synonymous with the sound, style, and spirit of the band. It’s a reminder of our humble beginnings and the playful creativity that helped shape our identity from the start.
Our first performance as a band took place at the Baltimore Old-Time Music Festival's Honky Tonk, a special event that celebrates the rich traditions of old-time music. It was an unforgettable moment for us — stepping onto the stage for the first time together, surrounded by fellow musicians and music lovers who shared our passion for this timeless genre. The atmosphere was electric, and it marked the beginning of our journey as a performing band.
Just two days later, we had the incredible opportunity to perform again at the main festival itself, alongside some of the finest old-time musicians in the region. This second performance was another milestone, allowing us to showcase our unique sound to a larger audience and gain the confidence that would propel us forward. Those early performances were pivotal in shaping who we are today, and they remain fond memories as the moments when we truly found our voice as a band.
